Marine Action Research (MAR) provides an opportunity for aspiring scientists and passionate conservationists to learn practical fieldwork skills, gain scientific scuba diving experience. To explore qualitative and quantitative data at the Zavora Marine Lab in southern Mozambique. MAR focuses on manta rays, humpback whales, nudibranchs and reef colonization. This is done through investigations of the marine life and coastal ecosystems of Zavora Bay.

Zavora has an incredible amount of biodiversity and offers the opportunity to study these unique and charismatic species in one of the most beautiful and wild areas of southern Mozambique.

Internships

MAR’s internship program at the Zavora Marine Lab in Mozambique was developed to provide a world-class opportunity for science students and dedicated conservationists to assist with and receive training in marine research and conservation.

Interns gain experience in all aspects of research and experience the challenges and pleasures of working in the most beautiful, wild and remote coastline of southern Mozambique.

Interns roles include collecting underwater and on-land data for any or all of MAR’s current research under the supervision of a qualified marine biologist Database entry and analysis, assisting with science communication and community outreach, and organizing or participating in events for environmental protection.

Cost and features

Cost varies if interns wish to add scuba certification – (e.g., Advanced Open Water scuba diving).  The internship fee covers interns’ expenses in Zavora and helps towards running the laboratory allowing MAR to exist and work towards conservation and awareness.

The internship fee includes:

  • Up to 25 dives per month including gear (12 for 2 weeks)
  • Research tutorials and assistance
  • Transfer from Inhambane to Zavora on the 1st of each month
  • One month accommodation
  • 5,000 Met allowance for food  (2,500 Met for 2 weeks)
  • Optional six traditional meals per week  (2,000 Met/month- discounted from your food allowance)

The internship does not include:

  • Flights and transport from country of origin to Mozambique
  • Internet
  • Visa expenses
  • University course fees
